Seoul: 7 Viral "It-Girl" Brands Cheaper Than The US

If you're flying to Seoul, leave your suitcase half empty.

While the US markup on “it-girl” Korean brands can be painful (hello, import taxes and shipping fees), buying them domestically is a completely different story. We're talking 30–50% off US retail prices, plus tax refunds. Here are the brands I actually shopped at, what I bought, and why they're worth the flight.

Shopping in Seoul

🛍️ The viral brand hit list

  1. 01
    Gentle Monster eyewear

    Gentle Monster

The undisputed king of avant-garde eyewear

High-concept artistry. Their stores aren't shops, they're immersive art exhibitions. I did some damage here. I originally bought one pair, but I literally could not stop thinking about their foldable glasses after I left. I went back the very next day to secure them. So yes, I came home with two pairs. No regrets.

    🇺🇸 US price
    ~$350 USD + tax
    🇰🇷 Korea price
    ~$230–$250 USD (tax-free)
    Don't miss
The Haus Dosan flagship in Gangnam. Their dessert brand Nudake is in the basement (get the viral black croissant) and Tamburins fragrance is on the top floor.
  2. 02
    Blue Elephant eyewear

    Blue Elephant

The Gentle Monster look for a fraction of the price

Classic, vintage-inspired frames that feel heavy and expensive but cost less than a dinner out. They're incredibly difficult to find these overseas without high markups.

    🇺🇸 US price
Hard to find, resellers charge $80+
    🇰🇷 Korea price
    ~$35–$50 USD
    Location
Their Hongdae flagship is a retro-American diner concept, very Instagrammable.
  3. 03
    Olive Young skincare

    Olive Young

The “Sephora” of Korea, but better

Candy land for skincare addicts. The selection is 10x larger than the global website, and you get “1+1” (buy one get one) deals that don't exist in the US.

    Viral picks
Torriden Dive-In Serum for glass-skin hydration · Round Lab Birch Juice Sunscreen, the cult-favourite SPF · Rom&nd lip tints, cheaper than a latte · UNOVE Deep Damage Treatment for silk-like hair.
  4. 04
    GLOWNY clothing

    GLOWNY

    The coquette / Pinterest-girl aesthetic

Dreamy, feminine and slightly vintage: think delicate cardigans, lace details and perfect slip dresses. I picked up a shirt here and I'm obsessed; it gives such effortless “clean girl” energy.

    🇺🇸 US price
Global shipping is expensive; dresses run $150+ via resellers
    🇰🇷 Korea price
    ~$60–$100 USD
    Note
Their Hannam or Gangnam locations often have stock that sells out instantly online.
  5. 05
    Low Classic tailoring

    Low Classic

    The “old Céline” of Seoul

Minimalist, structured and ambitious. This is for the corporate girlie who wants to look chic, not boring. It's a designer brand, so buying in Seoul saves you significantly on luxury duties.

    🇺🇸 US price
    Blazers often hit $400–$500
    🇰🇷 Korea price
    ~$250–$350 USD
  6. 06
    Stand Oil bags

    Stand Oil

    The daily bag

Structured vegan leather bags with a glossy finish, and you've seen these all over TikTok. They're famous for long shipping times to the US; in Seoul you walk out with it instantly.

    🇺🇸 US price
    $110+ USD
    🇰🇷 Korea price
    ~$70–$85 USD
    Tip
Their flagship in Seongsu operates like a conveyor-belt sushi spot, but for bags.
  7. 07
    Marge Sherwood bags

    Marge Sherwood

    The 90s cool-girl bag

Retro shapes, bold colours, and slightly edgier than Stand Oil.

    🇺🇸 US price
$300+ USD at retailers like SSENSE
    🇰🇷 Korea price
    ~$180–$220 USD

📍 Neighbourhood vibe check

  1. 🏙️ Hongdae

Gen Z, chaotic, youthful, creative. Best for streetwear, affordable accessories, busking performances and Blue Elephant. Fast-paced, stores stay open late, great for finding random, trendy pieces cheap.

  2. ✨ Gangnam (Sinsa-dong & Apgujeong)

Classy, polished, luxury. Best for flagship experiences: this is where you go for Gentle Monster Haus Dosan and the high-end clinics. Wide boulevards and valet parking; the “clean girl” aesthetic lives here.

Pro tip: if you have time, squeeze in Seongsu. It's the “Brooklyn of Seoul” and hosts the Stand Oil and Marge Sherwood showrooms.

💸 A quick note on tax refunds

  1. Get 6–8% back

Don't leave free money on the table. ⚡️ Immediate refund: most major stores (Olive Young, department stores) deduct the tax instantly at the register, and you just need your physical passport. ✈️ Airport refund: if you can't get an immediate refund, keep your receipts and scan them at the kiosks at Incheon Airport (before or after security) to get your cash back.
