Part 1: In the store

Request the form. At checkout, show your passport (I always bring mine to make sure I get tax free) and say “Tax Free Form, please.” The retailer will issue the digital refund document (DIVA form). Then choose your payback: when asked how you want the refund, select Credit Card.

Pro tip: card is the fastest way to be done once you leave the EU, and it maximises your refund (fewer commission fees).

Check the app first

Download the Global Blue app or Planet app before shopping. These often have coupons for an extra 10–20% refund at specific stores (like a 20% bonus on top of your VAT back). Show the coupon to the cashier.

Part 2: At the airport (the validation)

At your last EU departure airport (Madrid, Barcelona), find the DIVA kiosks for digital validation, and go before checking luggage and security. Scan the barcode on your form.

Green screen = success, validation complete. Red screen = see customs. You must go to the nearby customs officer for a manual inspection and validation. No validation, no refund.

Part 3: The collection

After validation you're done, based on your step 2 choice. If you chose card, the money is automatically credited to your account. If you chose cash, go to the Global Blue or Planet counter (usually after security) to collect your euros. Note this usually incurs a higher fee.

The continental advantage

The core of major savings is a simple truth: luxury items are priced lower in euros across the entire EU, and Spain has one of the most efficient VAT refund systems to lock those savings in. The rule applies universally: the price differential (EUR vs USD) plus the Spanish VAT refund (up to 15% back) equals huge savings.

Spanish heritage luxury: Loewe

The best place to start. Loewe is a Spanish luxury house, founded in Madrid in 1846. The base euro price is already optimised in its home country, and with the VAT refund applied, buyers routinely save $1,000–$1,400+ on iconic bags.
